What to expect

The Basilica of San Francisco el Grande was begun in 1761 and finished in 1784 by Francesco Sabatini and Miguel Fernández, on the site of an older monastery that tradition links to Saint Francis of Assisi. It is a round neoclassical church with a dome about 33 metres wide, among the widest in Europe. It was raised to the status of minor basilica in 1963.

Inside, the large circular space is ringed by chapels with paintings by well-known Spanish artists. The most famous is Francisco de Goya's early work The Sermon of San Bernardino of Siena in one chapel, painted in 1781, in which Goya himself is said to appear. The church is on a hill at the edge of La Latina, away from the main crowds. A visit takes 30 to 45 minutes.
