What to expect

The Royal Palace stands on the site of the old Alcázar, which burned down on Christmas Eve 1734. Its replacement, designed first by Filippo Juvarra and then carried on by other architects, was built between 1738 and 1755 in late Baroque style. It is among the largest palaces in Europe and is still the official residence of the Spanish royal family, though it is used mainly for state ceremonies.

A visit takes you through a route of richly decorated state rooms, with painted ceilings, tapestries, chandeliers and clocks. You can also see the Royal Armoury, one of the finest in the world, and the old Royal Pharmacy. It is indoors and mostly on one route, with queues in busy periods. Allow around two hours, and add the gardens if you have time.
