What to expect

The Edificio España is a skyscraper at the western end of Gran Vía, built between 1948 and 1953 by Julián Otamendi, with a structure calculated by his brother José María. Its mix of neo-Herrerian and neo-Baroque outside and Art Deco inside made it a landmark of 1950s Madrid. After several owners it was refurbished and reopened in 2019 as the Riu Plaza España hotel, and the facades were saved.

The rooftop is a hotel terrace near the top, open to people who are not staying, with a bar, a glass walkway and views over Plaza de España, the Royal Palace and the line of Gran Vía. It is an open-air spot, best for a drink at the end of the day. The experience is as much about the height as the drinks.
