What it means for your trip
On a public holiday in Madrid most offices and many small shops are closed, but the big stores and shops in the centre, the restaurants and the main museums usually stay open (Madrid lets shops open freely). The metro runs a holiday timetable. When a holiday falls on a Sunday, the Community of Madrid often moves it to the Monday.
